SF Open Studios 2018

All of us at sfclayworks are currently shifting into high gear as we prepare for SF Open Studios 2018 @sfclayworks, and our Annual Student and Community Members Exhibition-POUR (more info about POUR) SF Open Studios, the oldest and largest open studio event in the country, is an annual, month long art event held in October and November that showcases hundreds of emerging and established San Francisco artists. Each weekend of the event features a different geographical area of the city and provides an opportunity for the public to take a peak into the creative world of San Francisco's diverse group of artists. POUR: 2018 Exhibition @sfclayworks

We love highlighting what our students and community members create while at sfclayworks. For six years we have been giving our members the opportunity to show in "The Front Office Gallery,"  and every year they manage to wow us with their talents. Deborah Schwartzkopf’s Inspiring Workshop

Deborah Schwartzkopf Workshop-August 10-12, 2018 at sfclayworks Over the weekend of August 10-12, 2018, sfclayworks was excited to have Seattle ceramics artist Deborah Schwartzkopf in our studio. On Friday evening, the workshop weekend began with a gallery opening of Deb's beautiful ceramics in sfclayworks "Front Office Gallery". The exhibit of Deb's ceramics gave studio members, especially those unfamiliar with her ceramics, an opportunity to see her amazing work. Claymates

Claymates, a group show will have an opening Saturday, May 26, 2018 in “The Front Office Gallery” at sfclayworks ceramics studio. The show will feature all studio artists currently creating work in sfclayworks private studio spaces. My Last Week in Japan-Chris Lewis

Week 4 in Japan: by Chris Lewis               This was my last week at Tokyo Ryusen Studio, which included a trip to the famed pottery town of Mashiko, as well as a more modern pottery center in nearby Kasama City. At the studio, I refined my trimming techniques on the bottles I made, using a chuck. Note the trick of leaving the centermost part of the foot untrimmed to keep track of how much clay I’ve removed.   Trimming a bottle               We also wrapped our Bizen clay pieces from last week in rice straw for firing. Bizen pottery originates from Okayama-ken, in southern Honshu (Japan’s main island). Bizen is one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites, though this style was almost lost during the Meiji-era (19th Century) modernization.
