Joyce’s passion for clay began during her studies at Sacramento City College. During this time Joyce had the good fortune of meeting local potter Nicholas Guerrero who gave her the chance to learn more about the ceramic process in a working studio. Joyce went on to complete her ceramic studies at San Francisco State University-which included an opportunity to study abroad at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. During her studies at Waseda, she also participated in an independent study at the studio of Takeo Tsudo of Mashiko, Japan. It was during this experience that she renewed her love of making pottery for daily use. To broaden her knowledge base, Joyce has also studied with numerous internationally known ceramic artists. A former studio holder and instructor at The Clay Studio, San Francisco from 1998-2011, she continues to enjoy sharing her passion for clay with her students. Joyce’s work has been included in numerous local and national exhibitions.
