SF Open Studios 2023

Finally have a chance to recap the studio open house held at sfclayworks during San Franciscos big art event, SF Open Studios. On October 28-29, 2023 sfclayworks opened its doors to the community as part of the city wide art extravaganza SF Open Studios. Every year Artspan holds this event that spans 4 or 5 weekends of studio openings across various districts of the city. It can be overwhelming at times to visit so many studios on the same day, but SF Open Studios provides the public with a rare opportunity to peer inside the creative spaces of San Francisco's art community. Of course we think sfclayworks is a must see location as you can view so many artists at a single studio. This year [...]

Michelle Gregor Master Workshop @ sfclayworks

On Saturday, July 8, 2023 Bay Area based figurative sculptor Michelle Gregor came to sfclayworks and held a workshop for our members. Many of our members had never met Michelle before so they had an opportunity to meet her, see her work, and learn more about her working methods. Michelle demonstrated the coil build method that she uses for her amazing work. As most of our members are predominantly potters, it was nice to observe and learn new ways we can connect with clay. Below are a few images from the workshop. sfclayworks provided this workshop free to studio members which is an added bonus of studio membership at sfclayworks. Walleyed

On March 31, 2023 sfclayworks studio members had an opportunity to shine with the exhibition Walleyed. Fabulous sfclayworks artist and gallery director @LeighBarbier set the challenge for all of us 3-D minded clay artists to shift our focus to "Wall" work.  The show opened on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 5-7 pm in the Front Office Gallery. We had a nice crowd at the opening and everyone was excited to see the variety of work that was created for the show. As you can see from the images below, our studio members created some wonderful pieces and the display looks absolutely beautiful.  Challenges presented by these member exhibitions create exciting and fun ways for all of us to move away from what we usually make; the added [...]

Workshop with Maria Litichevska

On Saturday, Feb 17, 2023  community members of sfclayworks were honored with a master ceramics class taught by Ukrainian ceramicist Maria Litichevska. Maria started with a slide presentation of some of her work and a brief history of her art background. We were lucky to have our own member, Anelyia, help with translation when needed as Maria has only been speaking English since she arrived in SF 6 months ago when she escaped the war in Ukraine with her young son. Attendees wedged up some clay and attempted to join three pieces into a single form under Maria’s tutelage. We had a really good time, learned a lot from her and were all impressed by her grace, skill and tenacity. We hope we might be [...]

That’s a wrap – SF Open Studio 2022 @sfclayworks

SF Open Studios 2022 @sfclayworks Studio artist Beth Ozarow shared a few thoughts about this year's SF Open Studio  2022 @sfclayworks below.  On the weekend of November 5th and 6th, 2022 sfclayworks opened the studio doors to the public in celebration of SF Open Studios month for the first time since 2019. Participating this year were the following studio artists - Nina Salman, Beth Ozarow, Takashi Fukuda, and Sarah Cruz. Community members included Harry Brown, Shannon Leslie, Kathy Fugitt, and Laurette Lau. Special guest Saba Parsa, jam maker extraordinaire, of sabajam returned "home" this year to sfclayworks where she got her jammin start. We missed having Joyce Fujiwara there as the anchoring presence she is, and look forward to next time when she’ll join [...]

FOUND + MADE Exhibition @sfclayworks

On October 14, 2022 we reached a new milestone when we celebrated the reopening of the Front Office Gallery at sfclayworks. Under the direction of studio artist Leigh Barbier, the studio held its first post-pandemic gallery show and opening that helped bring our ceramics community back together. The show theme Found + Made was based on the idea of making something in clay based on an object we found in our daily life; this concept offered our studio artists a chance to explore ideas that perhaps were outside of their usual working  style.  Here are a few images from the FOUND + MADE Exhibition, and the opening party. So nice to be able to gather together  again and celebrate our amazing clay community.  Pieces [...]

Surface Decoration Workshop

Finally a group event! Following a nearly 30 month limit to studio activities, sfclayworks had a weekend workshop led by Nina Saltman. @saltmannina  There was a long list of topics covered including stamps, carving, sprigs, slip decoration, using underglazes, and slip transfer.  The workshop was well attended and everyone had a great time talking clay and having a masked social event. It will be interesting to see how these new techniques become part of our members pieces. This workshop will also be followed up with a workshop focused on handles later in the month. Below are a few photos from the event. Special thank you to studio member Takashi Fukuda for his fabulous photo documentation. Stamping   Carving   [...]

What a difference a year makes-February 2021

All of us at sfclayworks are continuing to consider how best to navigate the current Covid-19 crisis. Plans previously laid out for our students and community members changed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  One year ago today we were in the midst of our 9th year as a vibrant ceramics studio that provided classes, community studio membership, and private studio spaces. Since our closure, we have been operating in what we can best describe as “survival” mode, riding the fine line between reduced exposure to the virus and paying our bills. At this time we have cancelled all classes and have redefined community space memberships. We are allowing a slow reintroduction of members on a limited basis from our list of members who [...]
