Ceramic Sculptures by Barbara Vanderbeck

We are pleased to announce a new exhibit in the gallery at sfclayworks. From May 18-June 7, 2016 we will be featuring the ceramic sculpture work of San Francisco artist Barbara Vanderbeck. Barbara joined the teaching staff at sfclayworks in 2015 and we have heard nothing but rave reviews about her classes. When she is not teaching here at sfclayworks, you will find her in her own studio, or at other studios around town sharing her knowledge and enthiusiam for clay. Please stop in and see Barbara's interesting and colorful sculptures during our studio hours.   Barbara's work will be also be available for sale.                                               [...]

Seasoned Living: Ceramic Works of Marcia Rosser

It is 2016 and already five years since we all took the plunge to create sfclayworks. It has always been a desire of ours to have an active gallery space in the front of the studio. We are pleased to announce that besides our Annual Student and Community show, our SF Open Studio Show, and our yearly guest artist show, we are finally making that happen. When we started tossing around the idea for our new plan, we had the difficult task of figuring out who we wanted to showcase during our first display. We quickly decided that long time studio member, Marcia Rosser, would be a fantastic selection. Throughout the years we have watched Marcia move from making pottery predominately thrown on the wheel, to her fantastical salt [...]

Another Great Year…

We are grateful for another successful year at sfclayworks. Four years have passed since we collectively decided that we needed to create a clay studio to continue our journey in the ceramic arts; it has been an experience that has gone by so quickly.  As we head into our fifth year at sfclayworks, we have grown into an amazing collection of interesting members who all share a love for playing in the "mud". We have become a blend of adopted, and new traditions that help bring our community together. Besides the opportunity to share our love of clay through our classes and community studio access, we continue to look forward to our mid-year guest artist workshops, our student and community exhibitions, SF Open Studios, and our beloved end of the year Box Party celebration. The Box [...]

Drawn to Clay

sfclayworks is pleased to announce our 3rd Annual Student and Community member exhibition. For the past two years we have opened the gallery up to our students and community members so that they can show what they have been up to in the studio.  This years theme, "Drawn to Clay" will provide our studio members the opportunity to interpret what the title means to them.  This year's show will also be open to studio holders if they choose to participate. We always have the exhibition in conjunction with the broader SF Opens Studios event that showcases artists across the city over a five week span of time. During SF Open Studios, artists in various neighborhoods of the city open their studios to the public for open house exhibitions  allowing the public a peak inside a [...]

2015 Sam Chung Workshop Wrap Up

We are way overdue for a wrap up of our 2015 Sam Chung artist workshop. Sam's demonstration workshop happened over the weekend of June 27-28, 2015. On Friday evening of June 26th, we hosted an artist opening after which Sam presented an informative artist slide lecture. Sam shared images of his work from past to present, told us a little about his history, and shared sources that inspire his work. During the workshop, Sam created a variety of thrown and hand-built pieces that he assembled and altered in a variety of ways. Our visiting artists always make everything look so easy! Watching other artists work always provides those of us who work with clay a new perspective on the endless possibilities of what can be done with this material; [...]

sfclayworks 2014 Wrap Up

The end of another landmark year at sfclayworks; we are heading into our third year! As we close out 2014, we are extremely grateful for this fabulous clay community we have created at sfclayworks. We now have a number of yearly traditions we host during the year, one of them being SF Open Studios, San Francisco's city wide open studio event. sfclayworks artists completed their third SF Open Studio event on the weekend of Nov 25-26th, 2014. It always provides us with a great opportunity to show off what is happening in the studio. Even with the SF Giants battling for their third World Series pennant we managed to draw in a fair number of visitors. As many of you might have guessed, the city was [...]
