We are pleased to announce a new exhibit in the gallery at sfclayworks. From May 18-June 7, 2016 we will be featuring the ceramic sculpture work of San Francisco artist Barbara Vanderbeck. Barbara joined the teaching staff at sfclayworks in 2015 and we have heard nothing but rave reviews about her classes. When she is not teaching here at sfclayworks, you will find her in her own studio, or at other studios around town sharing her knowledge and enthiusiam for clay.

Please stop in and see Barbara’s interesting and colorful sculptures during our studio hours.   Barbara’s work will be also be available for sale.

Artist Statement:

Barbara Vanderbeck is a San Francisco based Artist who’s primary medium is clay.

An avid traveler, Vanderbeck’s work is fueled by her exploration of decorative motifs and spiritual iconography found through out the world.

She loves to play with form, color, texture and pattern. From bold, raw, tribal art such as Asmat or Mauri shields and totems, Hindu temples of Southern India, and the architecture of Antonio Gaudi, Vanderbeck is deeply influenced by the shared symbols, and concepts that link such diverse cultures to the collective unconsciousness.

Her rich surfaces are achieved by applying layers of colored slips and underglazes and fired in an oxidation atmosphere .

Much of her current focus revolves around designing sculpture for the garden.
