SF Open Studio 2014 @ sfclayworks

Fall is upon us and once again things at the studio have shifted into high gear. Two weeks from now we will be hosting SF Open Studio 2014 at sfclayworks; our third year having this event. Seven resident studio artists will be displaying what they have been up to in 2014. Most of the art on display will be ceramic art which will cover a wide range of styles from functional ware to sculpture. There will also be one of our artists displaying photography. Besides the city wide SF Open Studio event, we will also have on view our 2nd Annual Student and Community Exhibition, "Around the Table". Last years inaugural student and community  member exhibition, "Communitea," was such a success that we decided to make this an annual event. Our members really [...]

2nd Annual Exhibition is a Huge Success

On Friday evening September 26, 2014, sfclayworks members gathered together at the opening of our 2nd Annual Student and Community Member Exhibition, "Around the Table". We had a great turn out at the opening, but you would never know it as we were having so much fun we forgot to take any photos of the crowds! Oops..... Though we forgot to document the actual opening, we do have a few photos of the magnificent work our student and community members have been creating. We think this is a great opportunity for our students and community members to show off  what they have been up to. We love having the exhibition on display during our annual SF Open Studio event at sfclayworks as it  gives us the opportunity [...]

Around the Table: 2nd Annual Ceramics Exhibition

sfclayworks students and community space members are gearing up for Around the Table: sfclayworks Second Annual Student and Community Member Exhibition. This years exhibition opening will take place on Friday, September 26, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.. Last year's first Student and Community Member Exhibition, Communi-tea, was such a success that we knew we had created an annual event. From beginners to continuing members, this exhibition opportunity is open to anyone in our community who has the desire to show off their latest creations. We think this chance to showcase their latest work gives our members a solid set of goals that really helps them make sure they are making their very best work. Besides being an sfclayworks community event, we are also excited that the exhibition will be on display during San Francisco's city wide art [...]

Our Time with Julia Galloway

"Julia shared three beautiful July days with us at sfclayworks and shared her clay philosophy. She told us about her appreciation for labor, passion, and beauty. Together we looked at many inspiring historic pots. She emphasized that we can't help where we are from and how the clouds of Montana end up on her pots. We learned a lot, ate a lot, and laughed a lot! Thank you Julia Galloway!" __@sfclayworks The above comments captured the events of our Julia Galloway workshop at sfclayworks in a nutshell and were provide by Saba Parsa. Below we will try to recap in more detail the impact her visit had on some of us. Three beautiful days with Julia The workshop covered lots of ground in a very short [...]

The End of Our Second Year

Wow, 2014 already! At the close of 2013, sfclayworks officially completed our second calendar year as a business. We continued to improve our facilities during the past year; we added a new gallery space, hosted our first artist workshop, created sfclayworks t-shirts, installed a new sign, purchased a new electric kiln, and held our first ever student and community member exhibition. We're sure there are some highlights we missed on our list for the year 2013; we have accomplished a great deal since we first moved into 2240 Palou in 2011. The end of 2013 was once again capped off with our second annual box party; a tradition we all insisted be carried on from our former home, The Clay Studio. Below are some highlights [...]

Communi-tea Update

There has been lots of activity at sfclayworks lately and we have gotten behind posting our latest news. When we last updated the blog we were simultaneously getting ready for sfclayworks first student and community members exhibition-Communi-tea, and SF Open Studios 2013.  In this blog we are hoping to share a few photos of the Communi-tea opening party that was held October 25th, 2013 and a few snap shots of work in the show. sfclayworks first student and community member exhibition was a smashing success! Everyone who participated in the exhibit did an incredible job putting together some beautiful work for our first exhibition. Based on the response of our members and the visiting public, we are already thinking about  a theme for our next [...]

So far the results of the firings have been good and we can't wait to see how their work shines in our gallery space. Besides Communi-tea, sfclayworks studio artists are also getting ready for their own opportunity to show what they have been up to during the year. Thank you “Glaze Goddess!”

A giant thank you to Janelle Ziobro Moynihan, for two wonderful years of working with us at sfclayworks as one of our first "hands-up" workers. When we first got started at sfclayworks and implemented our "hands-up" program, Janelle was the first person to step up and express interest in making a commitment to learning more about working in the studio. We already knew we could count on Janelle because even before the doors at sfclayworks were officially open, Janelle came down to the studio and helped our crew build the studio we have today. Janelle has been a natural in the studio. Though she came in with a very basic knowledge of glazes, Janelle tackled the dreaded sink sludge and came up with some of [...]
