DENIZENS: The Art of Maurice and Alex Vercoutere
This is the first time that we will be featuring the work of a father and son duo in The Front Office Gallery. The show will open on Saturday, November 2, 2019 and will run till November 30, 2019. There will be an Opening Party on November 2, 2019 from 4-6 pm. Stop in and meet the artists!
Maurices’s work is made using a variety of materials, from tissue paper, white glue, and sometimes acrylic resin. You may also notice when viewing Maurice’s work, rather than cutting the paper with scissors, he chooses to use the energy brought forth with jagged torn edges. Maurice’s influences and inspiration come from a variety of sources such as the German Expressionists, The Blue Rider Group, Edward Hopper, Max Beckman, and Mondigliani.
Alex’s works are all made with water color and ink. Alex divides his influences and inspirations in two different categories – childhood, and present day. His childhood influences and inspirations are the Original Star Wars, Pokemon, and Howl’s Moving Castle-a film by Hayao Miyazaki. Presently he derives inspiration from nature walks and urban rubble.
The stark contrast of style and technique on display in this father and son show will give viewers a rare opportunity to look carefully and decide for themselves if there are any familial influences that are not readily apparent.

Below, both artists have provided a brief artist statement and a short biography. Though they have the father and son connection, their work is distinctly different from one another .
Artist Statement: Maurice Vercoutere
This is how these pieces were made,
Lots of coffee, lots of tea.
Lots of music, jazz for me.
Lots of staring into space,
until the music manifests itself
in color and shape.
Bio:
I’ve been painting and drawing all my life. Went to college as a fine arts major but was seduced by theatre. Spent the next 30 years working in that art form as a lighting designer. I have come full circle back to painting.
Artist Statement: Alex Vercoutere
These monsters wander an endless labyrinth where environment and inhabitant have become entwined.
Like most of my other works, the creatures here exist at a junction between architectural decay and natural growth.
Bio:
Lover of nature hikes, Dungeon and Dragons, and very heavy books.
His previous works include his college graduate show Bones in the Soup and a self published bestiary titled, Fall into Ruins.
